Is Kybella Permanent?

Yes, Kybella treatment is permanent. Kybella uses a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, a bile acid, to permanently destroy fat cells beneath the chin. Once these cells are destroyed, they cannot store fat anymore.

It is essential that a trained healthcare physician is the one to administer these injections, as deoxycholic acid can kill other cells in the process.

What Is Kybella?

Kybella, first approved by the FDA in 2015, is an injectable prescription medicine designed to improve the appearance and profile of the area below the chin called submental fat. As of today, it’s the only FDA-approved injectable treatment used for this purpose.

How Does Kybella Work?

Kybella uses a synthetic version of deoxycholic acid (DA) — a naturally occurring bile acid that breaks down consumed fats for intestinal absorption. This acid is injected below the chin to help break down the cells responsible for fat storage and the appearance of a “double chin”.

Specialists administer DA in very small doses, working to destroy fat cells completely or shrink them to release stored fluids. The body eventually flushes these components out, leaving the neck and chin more sculpted.

How Long Does One Treatment Session Take?

One Kybella injection can take anywhere from 15 to 20 minutes to complete. During the session, our expert staff will administer a few small doses, and you’re done!

Before the session, a healthcare professional will mark the injection sites with a marker, sometimes providing a numbing agent or ice pack to deal with any discomfort.

For this reason, interested patients can fit their appointments into their schedules even on busy days. They can head out on a lunch break or get it out of the way once the weekend hits.

However, people combining this treatment with other services like botox and fillers should expect longer sessions.

How Many Kybella Treatments Do You Need To See Results?

The number of Kybella treatments required to see results will vary from patient to patient. At Weight Wise, one of our doctors will work with you to determine a personalized treatment plan based on the amount of submental fat and your own desired results.

As a rule of thumb, most patients have between 4-6 treatments spaced at least one month apart. This being said, results are generally noticeable after 2-4 Kybella treatments. Additionally, in clinical studies, 59% of participants recieved a total of 6 treatments.

How Long Does Kybella Treatment Last?

As stated above, Kybella treatment is permanent. Once the fat cells under your chin have been destroyed, they can no longer store fat.

This means that once Kybella treatment has been performed and the desired results achieved, there is no reason to continue treatment.

How Long Does Recovery Take After Kybella?

In most cases, the overall recovery time of Kybella injections is around one month. Since it’s a non-surgical procedure, it has potentially fewer risks than its invasive counterparts.

However, there are still side effects associated with it. The most common one is swelling, which may cause discomfort for some people.

The swelling is temporary, but it’s still best to wait at least one month between treatments.

What Should You Expect After Kybella?

Like any procedure, Kybella injections affect people differently. For this reason, healthcare providers design unique treatment plans according to specific individual needs.

In most cases, patients require more than one treatment to achieve their desired look. Many people find that two to four treatments are the ideal amount.

The DA content in Kybella will eventually destroy most of the fat cells in the submental area, and the results should be lasting.

Who Is the Ideal Candidate for a Kybella Treatment?

Kybella is not more suited to one gender or skin tone. Instead, interested patients should check their submental fat level and skin type.

If you have a double chin that won’t go away with diet and exercise, you may be an ideal Kybella candidate. These scenarios may indicate that excessive fatty tissue is the culprit behind your cosmetic concern, which Kybella can address.

Also, Kybella works best on people with elastic skin. This skin type will contract on its own after the procedure as the fatty deposits melt away.

Note that Kybella will work wonders when paired with a healthy lifestyle. It’s not a weight-loss solution and can’t help patients when their weight goes up.
